The importance of good and regular dental care

Protecting your oral health is one of the keys to your overall health. The Mayo Clinic writes that problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body. That's one big reason good, regular dental care is important to your life. Aflac quotes that people without dental coverage are 67% more likely to have heart disease. Fortunately, most people believe in the importance of good oral care. However, there is often a misconception that dental insurance is too expensive.

Some health plans include dental care, along with coverage for vision. Sometimes that included coverage comprises convenient standalone add-ons to the health plan. The plans offered here can be add-ons, or riders, to your employer-based health coverage or to your own self-purchased major medical insurance. They can also be completely separate standalone dental and/or vision coverage packages.

Eligible standalone dental insurance plans can also serve as secondary or supplemental dental coverage to help pay for what your primary plan does not.

  • Annual coverage limits - the maximum amount the insurance pays - might be from $1,000 to $5,000 or more per year.
  • Categories of dental work usually include preventive, basic, and major.
  • Coverage is often at different percentages for different levels of service. Most preventive visits are covered at 100%. Successively more expensive and involved procedures are usually covered at lower percentages.
  • Some plans have annual or lifetime deductibles, usually from $50 to $200.
  • Most plans offer individual, dependent, and family coverage.
  • Plans sometimes offer successively higher limits for each of the first few years of  continuous coverage.
  • Some plans offer child-only coverage options.
  • Preferred (lower) rates are charged and accepted as reimbursement by in-network providers. Provider networks tend to be very large.
  • Some plans or types of service have waiting periods after enrollment before benefits are paid on certain dental procedures and categories.
  • Sometimes waiting periods and even deductibles can be waived if you show evidence of continuous prior coverage.
  • Some plans cover orthodontia; however, it is often only for children.
  • Dental plans often include vision coverage or offer it for an additional fee.
  • Vision coverage ranges from regular exams to glasses and frames to complete eye health and procedures.
