It has not been uncommon in history for a family to be somewhat self-sufficient in its production of various foods grown and raised on the land, the making of one's own clothing, even the building of one's own home and other structures.

Even all those items required others to produce the raw goods, supply the starting materials, and pass down the skills and knowledge.

Fortunately, we can rely on what others have done and discovered to help make life easier for all of us.
