The Hotspur Home

ABOUT US

Introduced in the 1890s, the European starling (Sturnus Vulgaris) has grown in population and spread to much of North America. This can be traced back to a Shakespear enthusiast who let 100 starlings in Central Park bring every bird Shakespeare wrote about to the Americas.
These cavity-dwelling, invasive species cause massive degradation to our ecosystems by out-competing with the native fauna. They are aggressive which leads to discouraging the other birds, like bluebirds, owls, and woodpeckers, from the areas that they inhabit. They have been spotted destroying other birds' nests and poking holes in the eggs of their competition. This can be with both nest and food. These pests also have no natural predators which are influential to their growing numbers. The starlings like to travel in groups and live in both rural and urban areas. They can cause health, filth, noise, and odor problems. They are also devastating to our agriculture industry.
The bird carries a number of diseases that can harm both humans and other animals like salmonella, blastomycosis, and transmissible gastroenteritis. This can destroy gain crops and fruit, eat cattle rations, and can also contaminate livestock water and food supply. This cost the Aguicutir industry around $800 million per year at $5 per hectare (Pimentel et al. 2000). Along with destroying a farm's crops they can also damage buildings' infrastructures by gutters and clogging drainpipes which are fire hazards. These pests run rampant with few checks in place for keeping their populations under control.
The Hotspur Home is the solution with its homely cavernous design. The starlings will want to check out their new home. However, it seems that this home is no home but instead a trap. The starlings can then be removed and the trap laid again to keep your fields pest free.
Hotspur Home was inspired by the Henry the IVth Shakespeare play where the knight, Hotspur leads an uprising against the king. This was one of Henry’s knights who made the deception the fatal blow. Now it's time for the Agriculture Industries to start an uprising against the European Starlings.
