was established in 1993 as an umbrella organisation of cooperatives. Nepal has 75 district cooperatives. In 1997, we started working on coffee; in 1999, we received our first organic coffee certification by NSASAA.
DCF has been involved in the international coffee trade since 1997. We grow pure Arabica – Typica, Bourbon, and a small amount of Caturra. Our 3,000 small-scale coffee producers each have 10–5,000 trees.
We work with over 3,000 smallholder coffee farmers in Gulmi. We provide training and workshops on coffee farming, seed planting, and seedling distribution. We also help our farmers and small coffee farm owners with legal advice, advocacy, and business training.
DCF Gulmi further supports farmers with equipment and training and if needed, we connect with other districts to give us a helping hand.
We follow NASSA and JAS organic standards in our farming and operations. However, we are currently not certified organic, partially because of the steep financial costs to renew the certificate.
DCF Gulmi follow a precise internal control system grounded in conserving and caring for soil and water resources while eliminating artificial fertilizers or synthetic chemicals. We also grow our own seedlings, ensuring they are healthy and strong.
We keep very careful records of all inputs used on farms and outputs. Soils are tested at the agriculture knowledge centre to ensure practices are maintained.
We train farmers in composting, pest management, and soil management. Training is provided by our agronomists at the farm level through demonstrations where even farmers with limed education can see and learn by doing and asking questions.
We also provide quality seedlings to our farmers, helping to ensure strong and healthy plants right from the start.
