Keeping Your Breathing Apparatus Ready for Life-Safety Operations

Fire Force specializes in professional hydrostatic testing of MSA Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) cylinders. Our certified technicians ensure your life-safety equipment meets all DOT and manufacturer requirements, keeping your firefighters and emergency responders safe.

Hydrostatic testing is a federally mandated safety procedure that tests the structural integrity of high-pressure SCBA cylinders. This critical test uses water pressure to verify that your MSA breathing apparatus cylinders can safely contain compressed air at their rated pressures without failure. We perform DOT-required hydrostatic testing on all MSA SCBA cylinder types, including carbon fiber composite and aluminum cylinders, along with complete visual inspection for damage, corrosion, dents, cuts, or other defects that could compromise safety.

Our technicians are specifically trained and experienced in testing MSA breathing apparatus cylinders according to manufacturer specifications. Fire Force operates as a certified DOT testing facility with all required equipment and documentation procedures. We understand how critical SCBA equipment is to your operations, so our efficient testing process minimizes equipment downtime while handling your cylinders with care and providing complete testing documentation for your records.

Testing Requirements and Compliance

Our MSA SCBA cylinder testing meets all requirements from DOT regulations, MSA manufacturer specifications, NFPA standards for SCBA equipment, OSHA respiratory protection requirements, and local fire department compliance standards. Carbon fiber composite cylinders require testing every 3 or 5 years depending on cylinder type, while aluminum cylinders must be tested every 5 years. All testing must be performed by a DOT-authorized facility like Fire Force.

Testing is required before expiration of the current hydro test date, after any damage or suspected damage to the cylinder, when required by department policy or insurance, and before returning cylinders to service after storage. Contact Fire Force immediately if your current hydro test date has expired or is approaching expiration, cylinders show visible damage, dents, or corrosion, equipment has been dropped or subjected to impact, cylinders have been exposed to heat or fire, or your department requires compliance documentation.

Our Testing Process

Each cylinder is logged and thoroughly inspected before testing begins. Cylinders are completely emptied, valves removed, and interiors inspected for contamination or damage. The cylinders are then filled with water and pressurized to 5/3 times their service pressure for the required test duration. Passing cylinders receive new hydro test markings, valve reinstallation, and complete certification documentation.

For safety, we must reject cylinders that show cracks, cuts, or gouges in the cylinder wall, excessive corrosion or pitting, damage to threads or valve area, or any condition that compromises cylinder integrity. We offer convenient on-site pickup and delivery service, drop-off service at our certified facility, and emergency testing services for critical situations.
