We have three main airports in Durban South Africa; it was first the old Durban Airport which is now the military airport (AFB Durban), the new King Shaka International Airport (KSIA), as well as Virginia Airport in Durban North.

King Shaka International airport

Durban has been a big work in progress with huge residential and commercial property developments happening, but mostly on the North Coast or Northern Suburban areas such as Ballito, Umhlanga and further up. One of these new developments was the construction of the King Shaka International Airport. Though it seemed as though it's development and opening in May 2010 came in as an inconvenience to the many that were used to the old Durban Airport, but more so affecting the businesses that were directly and indirectly influenced by the old airport, from local Durban guest houses, hotels, shuttles services, including the petrol station that had to close down because of the area being totally dead after the new airports opening. However, the KSIA still stands till this very day, and its somewhat of a massive upgrade from what we’ve had before, opening doors to more domestic and international flights, giving a much better flow, while allowing the airport to host more businesses within its structures and it being slightly secluded away from residential land is also somewhat of an added bonus, judging from the amount of noise commercial planes make. Travellers can use the paid parking facilities should they wish to drive and leave there vehicles at the airport while on a trip.

Flights: The new and more glorious King Shaka International Airport has open more room for domestic and international flights including the likes of EmiratesKhulula, Mango, SAA and British Airways to mention a few

Virginia airport
Virginia airport is located in Durban North just off the freeway connecting Durban Central to Umhlanga Rocks and La Lucia. It is, however, a much smaller airport that is also involved with a lot of local aviation schools of both commercial and private pilot license training. You will find helicopters and plenty small private jets to frequent these premises. The Virginia Airport is a short 925m (3035ft) runway, which is also home to a few tenants that are involved in the maintenance and fixing of aircraft as well. A while ago the Virginia Airport was known for being home to the Durban Airshow which was then later closed down for failing public safety compliance issues. You can easily take a short recess and walk to the other side of the airport, which is hardly a 5-minute walk, and take a break at the beach.

Airforce Base Durban
AFB Durban is your answer to what happened to the Durban Airport. The airport is located close to Isipingo , giving easy access to and from the freeway, you will still see small traces of what the old airport used to be like, including the now abandoned petrol station that closed down along with the airport. A partial part of the old Durban Airport’s land is shared and used by the South African Air Force, a South African team whom its role is mainly focused on landward and maritime search and rescues, and them being just helicopter unit, they, therefore, did not necessarily required that much operational land.
