We were chatting about promises that have been kept and those that have been broken. It reminded me that ‘Promises’ is the title of one of Jim Cleary’s songs on our new album coming out on December 9, 2022. I say ‘new’ only because it’s not been out before but in fact, its almost forty years since Richard Tandy produced Jim, myself and Bob Daffurn down at a swish London studio. Nineteen Seventy Seven was ELO’s heyday and their record company Jet Records had cast their net around to catch any straggling whimpets swimming out there on the rock n roll ocean. That's how Jim and I got to make this album. Sadly, when it was all done, it got filed on one of those big dusty record company shelves and it has lay hidden, more secure than state secrets, for these long years. But it is hidden no longer! The Secret Album by Morgan Cleary is secret no more, and is coming out on clear vinyl (Morgan CLEARy – get it?). However in the meanwhile, the years have taken their toll and for ten of them Jim has not been with us. He left behind a cache of work which always challenges me to higher things. He was the master poetician, an ex pat from the isle of poets. A man loaded with the currency of truths.
This album of Jim and my songs, constructed under the steady helm of Richard Tandy, was for so many years a secret condemned to obscurity. But now, with the kind permission of Jim’s family, and the blessing of the original custodians Jet Records, Grimm Doo Records are releasing it as a time-stamped memento to music and life.
