A common scenario that I hear described by new patients when they first come to me is that they have been diagnosed as being hypothyroid and have been put on synthetic thyroid hormone, but they still don't feel well. Usually they have had their TSH tested on a regular basis (and sometimes their thyroid hormone levels as well), and have been told that their thyroid gland is fine because all the tests come back within normal ranges.
When they come into my office, I suggest that they have a complete thyroid panel, along with other basic screening labs, if they haven't had them done recently. I test for auto-antibodies to the thyroid gland, and they often come back positive. Then we treat the cause of the autoimmunity to enable them to regain their health and feel better.
